Honoring Gregg Allman’s birthday has become a tradition at the Fillmore in San Francisco. The Allman Family Revival is hosted by his son, Devon Allman, a periodic contributor to Guitar Player who has joined forces with fellow Allman Brothers Band legacy players Duane Betts, Barry Oakley Jr., the rest of the Allman Betts Band, plus a host of guitar maestros including Robert Randolph, Jimmy Vivino, Samantha Fish, Eric Krasno, Luther Dickinson, Todd Park Mohr and Asher Belsky. Featured vocalists include Robin Zander (Cheap Trick) and Jimmy Hall (Jeff Beck, Wet Willie).
This summer the Allman Betts Band released its debut album Down to the River, showcasing the Southern style triple-guitar attack of Allman, Betts and slide ace Johnny Stachela. “What you hear on this record is the birth of a band,” Allman says. “This lineup had never played together in the same room until these sessions.”
The backstory goes back to the Fillmore. After his father’s passing in May of 2017, Devon did some soul searching and invited his longtime friend Duane to participate in a star-studded celebration of Gregg’s 70th birthday on December 8, 2017 in San Francisco. Allman’s band and Betts’ band toured as a double bill the following year, with the versatile Stachela playing a utilitarian role. The acts eventually merged. The players then documented their new music the old-fashioned way, recording it to tape at the legendary Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Alabama.
With a year of touring under their belt, we expect the Allman Betts Band are now a well-oiled machine, and with a gang of incredible roots guitar heroes on hand to honor a Southern jam-rock pioneer, who knows what magic might happen? Come find out and pick up a free copy of GP’s feature interview with Allman and Betts.
There will be a pedal raffle sponsored by Mesa/Boogie, and GP Presents is also thrilled to welcome Martin - who is sending a batch of Authentic Acoustic strings for players to check out - as a sponsor as well.
