Moniker Guitars, a custom guitar design shop based in Austin, TX, have released a brand new line of semi-hollow body guitars that were successfully funded with a Kickstarter campaign back in May. With an initial fundraising goal of $50,000 to be used for equipment, paint, wood, supplies and marketing, Moniker raised $61,352 by their 30 day deadline.
Moniker Guitars was launched in 2011 by two high school friends and offers a fully interactive website giving users the ability to customize any element of the guitar on 2 basic body shapes. The concept is similar to other customization sites like NIKEiD and Republic Bike. After strong demand for a semi-hollow body design from their customers, founders Kevin Tully and Dave Barry, took to Kickstarter to raise funds for the development and marketing of semi-hollow versions of their guitar bodies
“We were really excited by the response to the campaign,” said Tully. “Its encouraging to know that musicians were excited enough by the idea of customization to fund a new brand of guitars.”
The campaign received national press attention from the likes of MSNBC, TechCrunch, Guitar Player, and Guitar World, among others; while also catching the eye of several musicians including Kyle Shutt of national touring act The Sword, who worked closely with Moniker to develop his own custom guitar for the road.
Moniker’s line of customizable semi-hollow guitars are now available at MonikerGuitars.com. All semi-hollow orders placed in July will receive a FREE TKL hardshell case.
From the beginning Moniker has differentiated itself from other custom electric guitar manufacturers by offering an easy customization process, an affordable price, and faster turnaround times — about four weeks — compared to the months it typically takes at other shops.
In addition to the partnership they’ve recently created with Seymour Duncan pickups, they’re also one of the first U.S. guitar companies to utilize Houston-based PPG Envirobase paints — an environmentally safe water-based paint that contains (extremely) low VOC levels and quick dry times. This same brand has been adopted by high end car manufacturers such as Lamborghini and Ferrari.
