Oz Noy is that rare electric guitar player with full command of jazz harmony, mastery of pure and effected tones and an absolutely devastating sense of groove. He is renowned as a Strat cat with an unusual ability to utilize otherworldly effects in a sophisticated musical context.

Starting with his debut studio effort Ha! in 2005, Noy planted his freak flag in fusion territory and stood his ground.

Noy snagged the GP Readers Poll for Best Guitar Riff on a Record in 2007, earned Best New Talent in 2008 and then Best Out There Guitar Player in 2013.

Noy has been expanding into all sorts of different terrain lately. Last year he collaborated with drummer Tal Bergman (Joe Zawinul, B.B. King, Sammy Hagar) on the blues-rock cruiser Soul Stealer.

At the outset of 2022 he dropped Riverside featuring bassist Ugonna Okegwo (Clark Terry, Pharoah Sanders) and drummer Ray Marchica, a longstanding member of the Ed Palermo Big Band, which specializes in the music of Frank Zappa.

Riverside is a much more straight-ahead effort than we’ve ever heard from Noy, and it’s pretty wild to hear him cop traditional tones and tackle chestnuts such as “All the Things You Are.”

If there was any doubt in anyone’s mind that Noy’s twisted brain could straighten up and fly as high as the moon in a standard setting, Riverside is proof positive.

Oz Noy is a perennial GP Presents favorite.

Each event is completely different as Noy always brings a sense of adventure to his unique take on jazz, and with supernatural drummer Dennis Chambers (Santana, P-Funk) and bassist Jimmy Haslip (the Yellowjackets) in tow, the groove will surely be fathoms deep at Yoshi’s on Thursday, March 24.

We’ll be on site with free magazines and strings provided by Martin.
