Jim Campilongo is a longtime contributing editor to Guitar Player who authors the monthly column Vinyl Treasures, and he has also been called “an American treasure” by Billboard for his mastery of styles ranging from country to jazz. Fender recognized his uncanny ability to coax crazy licks and myriad unique tones from a Telecaster by issuing a signature model in 2013. Campilongo’s long list of cool credits includes Norah Jones and Cake, and he’s got an extensive history as a bandleader. He’s over-the-moon excited about his new release recorded live with his acclaimed trio at its weekly Rockwood Hall residency.
“I wanted to chronicle this part of my life and share the new songs I had written,” Campilongo says in his September issue feature, “but I also wanted to document this crazy trio that sounds like the Who meets Miles Davis in the best setting possible, which, for us, is onstage.”
Bassist Morrissey and drummer Dion have been Campilongo’s core co-conspirators on his country-jazz adventures for quite some time, and, as a trio, they practically become of one mind. Special guest Nels Cline (Wilco) does an incredible job of mind-melding with Campilongo and his krewe on the new live recording captured in New York City, and we’re sure to witness some mind-blowing interaction between the two guitar titans at this super exciting engagement at Yoshi’s in Oakland on July 24th.
GP will be onsite with free magazines, D’Addario goodies, and a Mesa/Boogie pedal raffle.
