The late Scott Weiland contributed his distinctive vocals to Stone Temple Pilots, the Wildabouts and the all-star band Velvet Revolver, who appear in the video below performing the Pink Floyd classic “Wish You Were Here.”
The group—which featured former Guns N’ Roses members Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum, as well as Wasted Youth guitarist Dave Kushner—lasted from 2003 to 2008 and was arguably one of the most successful bands for those artists outside of the acts with which they found fame.
“Wish You Were Here” is well suited to Weiland’s strengths as a vocalist, working with both his range and the world-weary tenor of his voice. Weiland, who died last night from as yet unknown causes, shines on this particular performance of the song, as do the rest of his stellar bandmates.
Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters and David Gilmour wrote “Wish You Were Here” in 1975 as a tribute to Floyd founder Syd Barrett, whose mental illness led to his departure from the group in 1969. It has since become a poignant ballad well suited to times of loss, such as this.
R.I.P., Scott Weiland.
