David Torn’s credits in various performance and production capacities include David Bowie, Jeff Beck, Tori Amos, John Legend, Sting, and Kaki King. Torn pioneered many looping techniques that blew the doors open for solo electric performers, and that is the nature of both Torn’s current tour and his brand new CD, Only Sky [ECM].
"This record is the closest to capturing what it is I do alone with a guitar at home," Torn says in the Only Sky press release. "When I’m improvising on my own in this way, it’s like a kind of self-hypnosis, or a sonic, secular meditation. It’s real-time composition, but it’s about relaxing into it—enjoying the flow of sound, letting the music happen in its own time—and being open to the unexpected."
GP’s Michael Ross raves:
"Torn the guitar hero is finally back with Only Sky, and it is everything fans of the whammy—bar and pedal—wielding wizard could hope for: a completely solo effort that showcases the innovative loops and go-for-broke soloing that place him on guitar Olympus."Look for Ross’ GP indepth feature interview with the wizard in the July issue of Guitar Player magazine.
