A punk band got the shock of their lives when they witnessed an airline baggage handler carelessly toss one of their guitars onto a pile of gear on the airport tarmac.

Members of the Perth, Australia, band Miles Away were on a Virgin airplane as their gear was being removed from the cargo hold at Perth Airport. One of the members decided to record the handler in the act.

“We were greeted very nicely upon arrival at the airport. And the best of care was taken with our guitars,” the band posted sarcastically on Facebook. “Thank you Virgin Australia and Perth Airport for taking great pride in selecting employees who are great at their job while having the utmost respect for fragile musical equipment.

“Unnecessary and disappointing.

“Come show your support for the terrible ground staff at Perth airport by coming to amps and having a good time.”

The video post was shared more than 20,000 times and attracted more than 4,200 comments in its first 40 hours online.

Miles Away said they began recording the incident after seeing other pieces of equipment thrown around by the handler. Their post originally said that the case had sustained “unnecessary damage,” but that portion of the write-up has since been deleted.

The band later posted that it would not ask Virgin to take action against the employee but wanted to bring the problem to the carrier’s attention.

“In no way do we want to see this guy fired,” they said in a follow-up post. “By posting this we just wanted to show our friends what happens to guitars when they are unloaded (by the looks of the many cases we have had over the years, I think this might of happened every time) and maybe the appropriate authorities would take notice.”

A Virgin Australia spokeswoman said the airline took the matter “extremely seriously” and has apologized to Miles Away.

One more reason to carry-on your guitar whenever possible.
