Guitar Player presented Mike Stern with its Certified Legend award in 2012, and now we’re proud to present Stern and his unbelievable band in the heart of the Fillmore Jazz District at Yoshi’s San Francisco.
Since his days with Blood Sweat & Tears in the mid-1970s, his stint in Miles Davis’ band during the ’80s, and a solo career that now spans more than 25 years, Mike Stern has used his jazz roots as a starting point for exploring all hues of the musical spectrum from R&B to rock, swing, funk, and world music.
Stern’s slinky phrasing, cool chorused tone, and deep grooves permeate his latest release, the aptly titled All Over the Place [Heads Up/Concord, 2012]. Among the crew of top players on the CD and this gig is Anthony Jackson—one of the most important figures in the history of electric bass.
The innovator of the 6-string “contrabass guitar” is largely responsible for extending the range of bass beyond its 4-string origins. Jackson can be heard on recordings by Steely Dan, Paul Simon, and Wayne Krantz. Jackson’s precision-picked groove and effected tone on the O’Jays “For the Love of Money” is simply one of the most iconic bass lines of all time.
Stern and Jackson trading licks on December 7th and 8th at Yoshi’s makes this engagement the fingers on strings showcase of the season. Guitar Player and Bass Player will be onsite Saturday night, December 7th, handing out free magazines and accessories and providing a chance to win a Hartman Envelope Filter or Compressor.
If you are going to be in the Bay Area on the first weekend of December, don’t miss this opportunity to see some of the finest improvisers on the planet at San Francisco’s premier jazz joint and Japanese restaurant, Yoshi’s.
Watch Stern jam with Jackson and drum maestro Dave Weckl.
