Jim Lill is a country shredder, but he knows his away around other genres. He also spends a lot of time on the road, where he meets and works with players from different genres, giving him insights into their techniques, sounds and habits.
To that end, he’s put together this video with seven tips to help metal guitar players improve their tone and performance.
“I’ve seen a lot of metal guitar players try to take on other genres, and even done gigs with some,” Jim writes. “Usually they have some habits that don’t work well in non-metal music (sometimes they don't even work well in metal music...) so I made this video to bring some awareness to metal guitar players looking to expand their playing capabilities.”
Jim has included tips about distortion levels, tone settings, playing scale runs, sweeping/tapping, guitar choice, and more.
Take a look, and when you’re finished, head over his YouTube channel for more of his great videos, many of which we’ve featured in here. Be sure to give his videos a “like” and leave a note of thanks.
Finally, check out Jim’s website, where you can find more lessons and MP3s and purchase his e-book, The Graphic Guide to Country Guitar. You can also join his mailing list to get immediate updates on videos.
