After half a decade of building his solo career, Chris Stapleton became known to millions overnight when he swept the 2015 CMA Awards on November 4 and performed two country-soul duets with Justin Timberlake.
But the Nashville songwriter and guitarist has long been teamed up with another performer: his wife, Morgane, with whom he has played almost every show.
The video below shows the pair performing “You Are My Sunshine” and turning the sweet standard into a swampy and soul-stirring ballad. With Morgane leading the performance, their voice intertwine in close harmonies that recall the keening vocals of the Louvin Brothers and Delmore Brothers. In the process, they captivate the rowdy crowd, which quickly turns silent.
The performance took place in May 2013 at Eddie’s Attic, in Atlanta, when Stapleton was known as a songwriter for artists that include Vince Gill, Peter Frampton, George Strait and Darius Rucker.
