On Sunday, May 22, Megadeth guitarist Dave Mustaine woke to the news that his former bandmate Nick Menza had died the night before while drumming with his band, OHM.

Mustaine was alerted to the news by his son, and after posting a note about Menza’s death on Twitter, he had to perform with Megadeth at the Rock’N Derby festival in New York.

By show time that afternoon, news of Menza’s death was just getting out, and many in attendance at the festival were unaware he had died. During the show, Mustaine, lit by a single spotlight on the darkened stage, broke the news to the crowd and asked for a moment of silence.

“I don’t know if you know this or not, but Nick went to heavy metal heaven last night,” Mustaine announced. “And we just ask that you would give a moment’s silence for him.”

Menza died suddenly while performing with OHM at the Baked Potato in Studio City, California. The cause appears to be a massive heart attack. He was 51.

Mustaine has released a statement about Menza’s death and announced he will pull together former members of Megadeth for a tribute show to raise funds for the drummer’s children.
