Leslie West has released his cover of Curtis Mayfield’s “People Get Ready,” from his upcoming album, Soundcheck, and you can hear it below.

The guitarist’s new disc finds him performing with a range of legendary artists, including the late Jack Bruce, Peter Frampton and Queen’s Brian May. Soundcheck is West’s first release since 2013’s Still Climbing, which featured appearances from Billy Gibbons, Slash, Steve Lukather and others.

“I am thrilled with how this came out,” West says of the new disc. “I am excited for the sound on this; it’s extraordinary, if I do say so myself.”

West explains in the album’s trailer, shown below, that the inspiration for Soundcheck’s title goes back to his early days in Mountain.

“I used to hate soundchecks,” he says. “It was the most painful part of my day. With my partner [Mountain bassist] Felix Pappalardi, we didn’t just do a soundcheck, we had to do half a show. We had to do one of mine, one of his, and we both sang. I got so pissed off one day I just knocked the monitors off the stage.”

West is more amenable to the process these days. “I like doing soundchecks now because he’s not around to bust my balls,” he says. “I just want the guitar to sound good.”

Soundcheck is scheduled for a November 20 release, and available for pre-order now.
