Mike Dunn works as the cellar master and assistant winemaker for his father, Randy, who makes California’s outstanding Dunn Howell Mountain and Dunn Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon wines. In 2003 he and his wife Kara founded Retro Cellars and started offering their own Petite Sirah wines. The grapes for this wine come from the historic Park Muscatine vineyard on Howell Mountain, which was planted in the Fifties.
Whereas many Petite Sirah wines are bold, brash, and aggressive, the 2007 Retro is a supple, sophisticated Petite Sirah with concentrated black fruit and a hint of earthy Howell Mountain terroir. This wine has the potential to age a lifetime—I recommend buying a case to track its progress over time, which should prove fascinating and satisfying.
