Some of the best wines produced within the Napa Valley appellation are not made with grapes grown in vineyards that line the valley floor but rather in the mountain sub-appellations that surround the valley. These sub-appellations include Atlas Peak, Diamond Mountain, and Spring Mountain, but drinkers whose tastes lean towards Napa wines made from grapes grown at higher elevations usually prefer premium wines produced in the Howell Mountain and Mount Veeder districts in particular.
Aurielle is a relative newcomer (its first vintage was 2006) that produces a compelling Cabernet Sauvignon from a 50/50 blend of grapes grown on Howell Mountain and Mount Veeder. The 2007 Aurielle is a dazzling effort from an outstanding vintage that manages to capture the essence of each region’s terroir,with results that transcend the sum of each part. The wine requires at least three hours of air in a decanter to fully bloom, coalesce, and soften, and when it does it rewards the drinker with a mouthful of concentrated but supple black fruit, plum, caramel, and mocha flavors. With another five years of age this wine should be irresistibly alluring.
