Guitar Essentials: Pentatonic Boxes That Don’t Suck

October 24, 2016

Any guitarist who’s ever played pentatonic boxes—and that would be just about every one of us—knows the danger that lurks within.

Pentatonic boxes, while useful and convenient, can become a trap in which you repeat the same or similar phrases in the same position time and time again.

In this video, Sean Daniel introduces a way to use boxes so that you don’t get trapped within them. He introduces four boxes and then strings them together with chords, giving you a more expansive view of the fretboard and a way in which to navigate it.

Take a look, and when you’re done, visit Sean’s YouTube channel for more of his great instructional videos, many of which we regularly feature here.
