Below is a video of Jeff Beck which recently showed up on Facebook.
In it, Beck plays a stripped-down version of Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing” in front of a small TV studio audience. The performance is entirely spontaneous and occurs as Beck demonstrates the wide range of tones he can coax from his Stratocaster. (That demonstration alone makes the video worth watching.)
As he begins playing “Little Wing,” Beck nods to London-based Swiss guitarist Nicolas Meier, who joins in to provide some backing support.
The clip is brief, unfortunately, but to make up for that we’ve included a clip from the same (unknown) show in which Beck and Meier perform an instrumental version of the Beatles “A Day in the Life.” Beck originally performed the song on George Martin’s 1998 album, In My Life, which is composed almost entirely of Beatles covers that Martin originally produced. Beck has since played it on numerous occasions, and it can be heard on many of his recent live CDs as well as 2008’s Live at Ronnie Scott’s CD/DVD.
Both clips also provide an excellent up-close view of Beck’s tremolo technique.
