Members of Dream Theater recently covered the Pink Floyd classic “Wish You Were Here” for Classic Rock.
The video, below, features John Petrucci on 12-string acoustic guitar, Jordan Rudess on piano, and James LaBrie on vocals.
Dream Theater issued their new concept album, The Astonishing, this past January, and at the end of their “Wish You Were Here” performance, Petrucci talks about Pink Floyd’s influence on Dream Theater’s music and the song’s significance to him. (Fans will note that Dream Theater have covered Pink Floyd tunes at many concerts, and performed The Dark Side of the Moonin its entirety.)
“It’s one of my favorite Floyd songs of all time,” Petrucci says of “Wish You Were Here.” “I have many memories playing that, back in high school even, at parties. It was just the one song that everybody seemed to know and loved to sing along.
“Pink Floyd is a huge influence not only on me but on the rest of the guys. Of course, The Astonishing is a concept album written around a story. Pink Floyd’s The Wall was definitely an inspiration. And they’ve been a huge influence. I love the fact that they have so many great songs that you can just strum on an acoustic guitar and have people sing along and know it. There is a real art to that.”
