This year marks the 30th anniversary of Metallica’s Master of Puppets. To celebrate, the band is releasing a new book, Metallica: Back to the Front, that reveals all the details behind the making of the landmark thrash album.
In newly released videos, guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich each offer guided tours of the book. While Hetfield’s video is all about enthusiasm, Ulrich opts for humor.
“Guess what I have in my hands?” he asks at the outset. “Nope, not that.”
As Ulrich reveals, the book features photos, original art, ideas for lyrics, and interviews with the band, producer Flemming Rasmussen and fans. Though the book is actually 276 pages—not 9,000, as Ulrich says—it’s packed with information vital to fans who have a deep appreciation for the album and Metallica.
Metallica: Back to the Front comes out September 13. A special Collector’s Edition will be released on August 30 via Metallica’s website and Moonrise Media. The Collector’s Edition will include a display box and a piece of a road case used on the Master of Puppets tour.
In other news, Metallica appear to be getting closer to releasing their next album. One source reports the album could be out on October 14. Ulrich previously told Metal Forces the album would be completed this summer. “If the record doesn’t come out this year then it won’t be because it’s not done,” he said. “It will be because there’s some sort of cosmic reason that it would be smarter to hold onto it until next year.”
