Sammy Hagar was asked the question that is undoubtedly on the minds of most Van Halen fans. While speaking recently with Daily Bulletin, the former Van Halen vocalist was asked what he would do if the band called him up for a reunion.

“My favorite thing to say without biting my own tongue is ‘no comment,’” Hagar says. “Every time I turned around, it was a no-win situation. If I say what I feel, I would always get 50 percent of the Van Halen fans saying, ‘Right on, you rule.’ Then the haters would dog me, like, ‘You’re always dogging Van Halen.’ I’m going to shut up. They get their wish. We’ll see what happens when it happens—if it happens.”

Hagar and Van Halen parted ways in 1996 but reunited in 2003 for a 2004 summer tour. Hagar left again in 2005 and has focused his attention on other musical projects, including Chickenfoot, which features guitarist Joe Satriani, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony.

Hagar seemed to burn his bridges with Van Halen in 2015 when he released a scathing video in which he called out Eddie Van Halen for disparaging comments he made about Anthony in a Billboard interview. However, Hagar seemed to extend an olive branch to Eddie when he tweeted birthday greetings to him this past January 26. Van Halen replied kindly, and the exchange prompted a new round of “what-ifs” about a possible Hagar–Van Halen reunion.

For now, however, Hagar remains committed to his other projects, including his AXS TV program, Rock & Roll Road Trip, which launched on January 24. The February 14 episode will feature his band, the Circle.
