Gospel stars the Campbell Brothers epitomize the shimmering steel-guitar-based style called “sacred steel,” which has only recently spread beyond the church to secular music venues across the country.
Sacred steel originated in the Nashville-based House of God Pentecostal Church of during the 1930s when the more affordable steel guitar replaced the pipe organ. Sacred steel’s popularity has skyrocketed in recent years. Robert Randolph is perhaps the genre’s most famous face, and he readily acknowledges the Campbell Brothers as a huge influence. In addition to wild man Chuck Campbell’s pedal steel, the Brothers include Darick Campbell on lap steel, and Phillip Campbell on solidbody electric guitar. The Campbells combine soaring gospel spirituals with blues, country, and jazz.
For this event, the Brothers will present a foot-stomping take on John Coltrane’s devotional suite, "A Love Supreme," instilling it with a gritty, raucous dimension. An incendiary guitar-slinging gospel band performing jazz’s greatest prayer makes perfect sense, as both the Campbell Brothers and John Coltrane were moved to express spiritual devotion through the transformative power of music.
