Guitar Player Presents will ring in Christmas weekend and cap off 2018 at the acoustically pristine Freight & Salvage with the David Grisman Sextet. The swinging acoustic jazz ensemble will play shows on Friday and Saturday nights, and GP will be onsite to help kick things off on Friday with free magazines plus D’Addario accessories and a Mesa/Boogie pedal raffle.
Grisman is simply one of the mandolin’s most accomplished players and ambassadors, and he has extensive history with Guitar Player and Frets (88 columns in total, according to the man himself).
Grisman has great appreciation for sensational six-stringers, and he’s constantly adding to his list of awesome guitar collaborators. It’s a career theme that ranges back to his legendary work with Jerry Garcia, Tony Rice, and Stephane Grappelli, and has continued via collaborations with Del McCoury, Frank Vignola and, most recently, recording and touring with Tommy Emmanuel.
The David Grisman Sextet is Grisman’s flagship band, and George Cole has held the guitar chair for the past five years. Cole was the conduit for Grisman’s ideas on The David Grisman Sextet, which was released on his Acoustic Disc label in 2016 and represented Grisman’s first all-original release in a decade. For the Sextet’s live show, Cole is tasked with interpreting myriad guitar parts originally laid down by all those amazing guitar players.
“I don’t try to copy them because that would be pointless,” Cole says. “In the Sextet we try to present David’s material in the best and most current way possible.”
Cole informed GP that the sets at the Freight & Salvage will be entirely different on Friday and Saturday nights, and will consist of songs culled from the entirety of Grisman’s illustrious career including “Gypsy Nights,” “Grateful Dawg,” “Minor Swing,” “Port Townsend Blues,” “Blues for Vassar,” and many more.
