Sully Erna — founder, vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter for multi-platinum rock band Godsmack — is giving Guitar Player readers an exclusive first look at his lyric video for "Different Kind of Tears" from his forthcoming BMG solo album, Hometown Life, due for release on September 30.
Composed by Erna on piano and acoustic guitar, and produced in his New Hampshire studio, the ten songs on Hometown Life show off some compelling "other sides" to the Godsmack frontperson, such as his forays into country, Motown soul, bossa nova, and even orchestral pieces.
"Honestly, this is one of my favorite songs on the album," says Erna. "I had the pleasure of writing this track with songwriter/producer Zac Maloy (Tim McGraw, Carrie Underwood), and I really love the melodies and the chorus because of the vulnerability. It’s one of those things, when we’re in pain, we don’t think anyone can understand how bad we hurt — how deep it goes. I try to write generalized enough to have people translate these lyrics and thoughts to their own lives, and to help them through their tough times. Music is a gift. It’s there to help us heal."
