Directed by John Landis and produced by Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson's groundbreaking Thriller video aired for the first time today in 1983.
The monster-filled video, made to indulge Michael's monster-movie fantasies, aired at midnight on MTV, and it remains a cultural phenomenon over three decades later. MTV was only in its second year when Thriller cemented its place in history and changed the video industry overnight.
At half a million, this was by far the most expensive music video ever made. It was also the first music video to be inducted into the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress for being “culturally, historically or aesthetically” significant.
