Jim Campilongo brought a new crew with tons of energy to the Yoshi’s SF stage for his Dream Dictionary CD release/Christmas shows. It was a blast to witness the twang jazz master interact with such a visceral rhythm section. Bassist Chris Morrissey and drummer Josh Dion brought fresh flavors to Campilongo classics such as “Heaven is Creepy” and new nuggets including an unforgettable rendition of his melancholy ballad, “The Past Is Looking Brighter and Brighter.”
Campilongo was in top form on his toploader ’59 Tele, and in high spirits surrounded by friends, family, and a host of appreciative players. Saxman Bud O’Shaughnessy used to jam with Campilongo back in the day, and he brought along his son James, who won the Guitar Player Presents prize pack consisting of an autographed CD, a Planet Waves polish kit, a set of D’Addario XL strings, and pair of D’Addario’s killer new NS Micro Headstock Tuners. Campilongo clearly digs the Micro, as he had one clipped to his headstock onstage, and when he dropped by GP to detail his classic Tele in this exclusive video.
