John Petrucci Shreds Majestic Nine-Minute Version of Prince’s “Purple Rain”

Dream Theater’ John Petrucci paid a visit to Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California, on August 30, 1998, where he performed some songs from Liquid Tension Experiment.

LTE was a group formed by Petrucci, Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudess and Mike Portnoy, who was then drumming in Dream Theater. They were rounded out by King Crimson bassist Tony Levin.

For this performance, Petrucci performed “karaoke style,” playing along with a backing track.

But he threw a bit of a left curve at the audience for this second number: a cover of Prince’s “Purple Rain,” on which he proceeds to shred majestically for nine full minutes.
