Every guitar player we work with on a GP Presents promotion can play, but Carl Verheyen is exceptional for how he inspires others to get their fingers working in fresh ways on the fretboard. That’s why his visage graced the cover of GP’s Super Chops issue in July, and we’ll be handing out free copies when Verheyen heads to Oakland’s Jack London Square in mid September.
Verheyen is probably best known for his work with Supertramp, but he’s also got gobs of groovy session credits including the Bee Gees and Cher, as well as every episode of Cheers, and his Django-influenced soundtrack to Ratatouille. Verheyen is currently supporting his latest solo effort, The Grand Design, which coincidentally features a guest appearance by last month’s GP Presents artist—slide blues master Sonny Landreth. It also features Oakland-based drum skin slammer John Mader, who will be on the throne at Yoshi’s as well.
To cover his huge stylistic range, Verheyen has mastered a ton of techniques. Come catch him work his magic onstage, and then head home inspired to tackle the lessons he gives in the Super Chops issue on hybrid picking, bending, vibrato, and more.
