Metallica’s Back to the Front book is the definitive story of their 1986 masterpiece, Master of Puppets and the tour that followed it. Though the album was a triumph, the tour was marked by tragedy when the group’s bus crashed in Sweden, causing the death of bassist Cliff Burton.
In this newly released video, Burton’s father, Ray, is shown receiving his deluxe edition of the book, which features photos, original art, ideas for lyrics, and interviews with the band, producer Flemming Rasmussen and fans.
“That’s a good picture of little Cliff with his Rickenbacker that’s in the [Rock and Roll] Hall of Fame,” Ray says, as he scans one picture. “My gosh, I’ve never seen this picture before,” he says of another image. “That guy Matt [Taylor, author]—really, really thorough.”
Metallica: Back to the Front comes out September 13. A special Collector’s Edition will be released on August 30 via Metallica’s website and Moonrise Media. The Collector’s Edition will include a display box and a piece of a road case used on the Master of Puppets tour.
Metallica reports that the deluxe edition of Back to the Front has sold out on Metallica.com. If you haven’t pre-ordered your copy, check availability at MoonriseMedia.net, the only other place carrying the deluxe edition.
