Eric Clapton has long identified JJ Cale as an influence, a mentor, and a critical component of rock music's evolution. Now, a year after the reclusive Cale passed away from heart failure at 74 years old on July, 13, 2013, Clapton is honoring his hero's legacy with Eric Clapton & Friends: The Breeze, An Appreciation of JJ Cale.

The star-studded project features 16 of Cale's songs with performances by Clapton, Mark Knopfler, John Mayer, Willie Nelson, Tom Petty, Derek Trucks, Don White, and others. The album digs deep into Cale's songwriting, but does not cover perhaps his best-known tunes "After Midnight" and "Cocaine."

It's a fitting tribute to a man that Clapton didn't actually collaborate with until the 2006 album, Road to Escondido — a project that, at the time, prompted Clapton to say, “This is the realization of what may have been my last ambition, to work with the man whose music has inspired me for as long as I can remember.”

Eric Clapton & Friends: The Breeze, An Appreciation of JJ Cale will be available July 29, 2014.
