Forgotten Guitar recently shared this classic video of B.B. King jamming with Larry Carlton back in 1983. The 47-minute video, titled “In Session,” shows the two men performing some stunning workouts on a mix of classic blues and fusion jams, including “The Thrill Is Gone,” “Hummingbird” and “Just a Matter of Time.”
For Carlton, performing with King was the chance of a lifetime. As Carlton’s web site notes, he began taking guitar lessons at the age of six and played his first professional gig at a supper club in 1962 at the age of 14. Hearing Joe Pass on the radio inspired him to play jazz and blues, and Wes Montgomery and Barney Kessel became important influences as well.
But it was B.B. King and other blues guitarists who brought additional dimensions to his guitar playing. When he got a chance to record this show with King, naturally he took it. Here’s a chance to hear these two masters of the guitar do some work together.
