If you have ever been to my website www.kennyleelewis.com I tell a story about running away from home one night at 13 to see The Steve Miller Band trio. He was always a pop idol of mine ever since I heard pirate radio jock Tom Donahue float "We Are Children of the Future" up the Delta from San Francisco to my hometown of Sacramento in 1967.
Steve is a real gentleman, a pro, a technology revolutionist, an electric blues historian, and has one of the most gifted recording voices ever signed to a label. He's also one hellava guitar player. I have learned as much from him on tone and technique than any of the other idols this fine magazine lionizes on it's covers monthly. The three J's, EC, and Steve all were on the same LP stack on my Gerrard turntable everyday. Steve has shown me taste, tone, and solo building ideas that will be with me until I'm pushin' up daisies.
Though not an electrifying dancer or poser, Steve's command of his instrument and his tasty vibrato can send the crowd into a frenzy just standing front and center. Oh I get a few solos here and there, but really it is an honor just to support the rhythm section and deliver those iconic hits every night and hear Steve play. Now that Steve's godfather Les Paul is now over-dubbing in the sky, Steve wants to carry on in Les's energy bunny tradition by playing his heart out until the lights go out!
