Jeff Beck has been featured in GP many times over the years, and last Friday it was my turn to interview him. We met at the Sunset Marquis in Hollywood, California, where he was hanging out to rehearse with a mostly all-new band for his upcoming tour and his appearance on the Grammys on the following Sunday. Beck was eager to talk about his new album Emotion & Commotion, which is his first studio album in seven years. The material on it is wide ranging and includes covers of “I Put a Spell on You” (with Joss Stone on vocals), an instrumental version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” and several other instrumental pieces on which he leads a 64-piece orchestra. Beck offered lots of insights into his tones and techniques—including what it takes to make instrumentals sound amazing, the reasons he’s currently digging tweed Fender Champs, and why it can be a good thing to struggle with your guitar. So stay tuned for our upcoming cover story on Jeff Beck, as we can all glean something from this most unique and gifted guitarist that’ll improve our own playing.
