Only four people in the world know what it was like to be a founding member of the Smiths, the moody Manchester band that helped define indie rock in the mid ’80s. For one of them, Andy Rourke, it was one remarkable chapter in a long musical career. But in 2002, when the Smiths landed atop U.K. music magazine NME’s poll ranking the 50 Most Influential Bands of the Last 50 Years, it became undeniable that the embers of the Smiths were still burning brightly nearly 15 years after the band’s breakup.
