I’m not sure this DVD is going to be something of supreme interest to those who are already down with the Stripes’ live show, but it would be unfortunate if the absence of bonus footage or juicy, behind-the-scenes outtakes, keeps anyone from seeing this stunning 26-song performance captured at the Empress Ballroom in Blackpool, England. The Stripes’ sound is raw, explosive, and edgy, and Jack is both cool and fierce as he lays into the packed house with barrages of intense, bluesy riffs and vocals—particularly on the Dolly Parton classic “Jolene.” Well, words cannot do justice to the primalness of the experience. And speaking of primal, Meg’s drumming is the embodiment of minimalism, but she’s absolutely amazing at it, and you really get a vibe for how these two play off each other thanks to the fine, close-in camera work of famed director Dick Carruthers (the Who and Led Zeppelin). GP doesn’t do stars, but I’m giving this excellent DVD five anyway. BMG Video.
