String Encounters Of The Second Kind

This month’s installment of Vintage Sounds could be considered Part 2 of my first column, way back in the Feb. ’05 issue, wherein I discussed how to coax dark, swirling string textures reminiscent of the classic Prophet-5 synthesizer. Here we’ll explore a different but equally evocative flavor of faux-string darkdom, something I like to call “The Gary Numan Spooky Polymoog Strings!” (Cue sounds of new wave howling, thunder, and . . . uh, androgeny.)
