Steve Khan On Wes Montgomery

“I have always been committed to improvised music,” said Steve Khan in the March ’79 GP. The jazz great and session ace proved this devotion by intensely studying and transcribing one of the greatest improvisers the guitar has ever known—Wes Montgomery. In the same article, Khan shared musical examples that showed ways Montgomery comped over “Sundown” and other 12-bar-blues-like progressions, including this interesting turnaround. Try it over the last four bars of a 12-bar jazz-blues in A to give the progression a “surprise ending.” (Be sure to spin Steve Khan’s new solo album, Borrowed Time [Tone Center].)
