Co-presented by Loyola Marymount University's campus station KXLU, the show will be open to music fans of all ages.
The Santa Monica show is the most anticipated to date, as Sonic Youth celebrates the reissue of Daydream Nation, the band's legendary 1988 album hailed by Rolling Stone as one of the "500 greatest albums of all time." Sonic Youth will perform Daydream Nation in its entirety in a special performance at the Greek Theater in L.A. the night before their Free Yr Radio show. In contrast to the Daydream Nation performance, the Free Yr Radio show will feature a 30 minute set of songs culled from Sonic Youth's extensive catalog. Sub Pop recording artist and electronic music prodigy Dntel will open the show with a DJ set. Dntel's Jimmy Tamborello is best known as being half of The Postal Service, whose debut album exploded selling over half a million copies, winning fans worldwide.
He is also a direct product of non-commercial radio, getting his start as a DJ on L.A.'s own KXLU.
"My experience at KXLU was easily the most valuable part of my education," says Tamborello. "I met all of my friends there because it was a whole community of other people obsessed with music. I shudder to think of where I'd be now if I'd gone to some other school and not had the experience I had at KXLU, so I'm glad I can be a part of a program like Free Yr Radio that's giving some support to help keep college radio alive."
Like the other Free Yr Radio partner stations, KXLU will continue to receive promotional and financial support beyond the in-store concert. At the July 21 show, KXLU will announce an on-air promotion awarding one of its listeners a brand new Toyota Yaris, adding a fan appreciation element to its summer fundraising drive, and will also receive proceeds from a compilation CD that will be released through Urban Outfitters later this year.
"KXLU 88.9 FM is thrilled to be a part of Free Yr Radio," says General Manager, Daisy Buchanan. "The program will be fun and entertaining and will bring attention back to true indie radio. Having Dntel perform is extra special as Dntel's Jimmy Tamborello is both a KXLU alum and a frequent guest DJ."
The in-store concerts kicked off April 15th at Urban Outfitters in Chicago with a performance by British psychedelic-progressive-pop trio, Klaxons. The tour continued with a stellar lineup that included The Ponys (Lawrence, KS), Voxtrot (Houston, TX), The Long Winters (Seattle, WA), The Rapture (Philadelphia, PA), Rogue Wave (Santa Cruz, CA), Tapes 'N Tapes (Minneapolis, MN), Dinosaur Jr. (Boston, MA), and Annuals (Raleigh/Durham, NC ). Additional shows are also scheduled in July with performances by Grizzly Bear in Cleveland and El-P in New York City.
Entry to the Santa Monica show will be awarded to those who present an official event invitation, which can be accessed and printed from the program's website, www.freeyrradio.com. Number of fans admitted will be subject to store's capacity.
