PRS: Mira Maple Top

It Has Been Roughly A Year Since We Last Reviewed The Mira, And the good news is that nothing much has changed with this sweet sounding guitar—except for its top, which is now available in carved flamed maple. We didn’t have an all mahogany Mira here to compare, so it wasn’t possible to see how much the maple improves the sustain and/or brightens the tone, but we can say that the Maple Top sings beautifully when feeding an overdriven amp or pedal. The PRS-made Mira pickups are reminiscent of good PAF-style ’buckers, and they’re well balanced in terms of clarity and output. The mini coil-split toggle cuts the inside coils of both pickups, which elicits a sparkling shimmer that is particularly cool for funky rhythm playing in the dual-pickup mode.

The retro-style plastic knobs have 12 flat sides that are easy to grip when your fingers are sweaty, and the Tone control is very useable even when turned to zero—which makes for great Clapton-style “woman” tones when driving a fat-sounding fuzz pedal. As with the original Mira, the Maple Top intonates superbly and sounds musically tuneful all over the neck. The wide/thin neck carve on our review model is a pleasure to grip, and, coupled with the lightly polished frets and a low action, it’s just a great feeling thing to play. Other nice touches include the locking Phase II tuners, and a slippery nut that simply refuses to bind the strings. The abalone “bird” inlays on the fretboard (a $420 option) are perfectly done, and while the top wood on this axe is obviously not the finest that can be special ordered from PRS, the Violin Amber Wraparound-burst finish it wears is warm, inviting, and pretty as, well, polished amber. The Mira Maple Top is a welcome addition to the line—an ideal blues and alternative/hard rock guitar—and is certainly one of the coolest choices around for anyone looking for a great performing dual-humbucker axe.
