Passing Note: Bruce Barr

Stompbox entrepreneur Bruce Barr, who died in an automobile accident on January 25, 2008, was an instrumental figure in the resurgence in popularity of effects pedals in the mid 1990s. Barr, who was born July 14, 1958, helped GP out immensely back in 1995 by loaning us numerous vintage pedals for our June issue cover story “Stompbox Fever.”

And as the owner of Sound Barrier Music International in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Barr bought and sold stompboxes and educated guitarists about their sonic value at a time when pedals were generally considered obsolete (can you imagine that?). The explosion in stompbox awareness and the rise of the boutique pedal industry had much to do with Barr’s knowledge of the subject and his passion for those fabulous analog sounds that were almost forgotten in the dawn of the digital age.
