Amino Acid Flashback

Ohm guitarist Chris Poland is one of the best-kept secrets in kick-ass guitar today. This veteran of Megadeth (he was the original lead guitarist from 1983-1987 and is all over the latest record, The System Has Failed) has flown under the radar for far too long, but he might just grab the public’s attention with this release. The 11 tunes on Amino Acid Flashback are absolutely overflowing with killer 6-string work that is aptly described in the press kit as “fusion that rocks.” Joining Poland on this disc are Robertino Pagliari (Steve Lukather, Frank Gambale) on bass and Kofi Baker (Ginger’s kid) on drums, both of whom turn in great performances. But it’s Poland’s show and he rules. If it’s possible to evoke Al Di Meola and Allan Holdsworth in the same solo, Poland can do it. He also possesses the very cool ability to play a jaw-dropping run and then land on a note that you would never expect, making the line that preceded it about 100 times cooler. Fans of inventive, rocking, funky fusion need to hear this record. Blacknote. —Matt Blackett
