Nigel Bennett recorded a cover of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides, Now” for his recent solo album, Truth or Consequences. Bennett is no fan of the singer/ songwriter, however, and he used his detachment to craft a unique take on the classic tune.
“Her version is a bit soppy for me,” says Bennett, “so I gave it a British feel—hard and aggressive. I didn’t even learn the song, because I’m not very good at playing like other people. I just found some root chords that fit the melody, and I whacked them out Townshend style. I didn’t worry about refining the arrangement, either. I’m very much a onetake man. The more I play something, the worse it gets [laughs]. I think it’s essential to finding your true voice as a guitarist that you put your back against the wall and see what comes out when you’re under the gun.”
