Finally available on CD (as well as a CD/DVD package), this infamous recording of the original short-lived Crazy Horse lineup—which features guitarist Danny Whitten—takes you back to when Young, fresh from his stint in Buffalo Springfield, was launching his solo career. Neil’s new band—which he’d recently discovered playing in a club in Los Angeles—provided the perfect plodding backup for his grinding masterpieces like “Cowgirl in the Sand,” “Everybody Knows this is Nowhere,” “Down By the River,” etc. The fierce guitar interplay between Whitten and Young was a unique aspect of the Crazy Horse experience—one that would end with Whitten’s death in 1972—and to hear these raging guitars in all their rugged glory is to re-appreciate the stellar songwriting and punk attitude that Neil Young brought to music scene as the curtain closed on the psychedelic ’60s.
