Former Tiffany MD and Mandy Moore session player Loren Gold further develops his own front-man voice with the key-centric (and appropriately-titled) Keys. Stretching from instrumental pop to jazz, bossa nova to rock, this disc is a hard one to categorize — and that’s a good thing. And it’s a bit of a departure from Loren’s regular gig manning keyboards for Hilary Duff, which isn’t bad either. A mellow atmosphere pervades Keys, and Loren’s work on the Rhodes and acoustic piano is polished and assured. The grooving “My Baby” and bittersweet “Coming Home” are standouts, though there’s impressive musicianship on display throughout.
