Guitar Player is happy to welcome San Francisco native Jim Campilongo home for the holidays with a very special engagement at the Make Out Room, a hip hot spot in the happening Mission District. A longtime fixture on the Bay Area scene before moving to New York City, the country-jazz noir phenom has made many appearances throughout the pages of Guitar Player. He’s an interesting interview subject, an informative instructor, and has earned many raves for his instrumental CD releases, including his latest effort, Heaven is Creepy [Blue Hen]. His sideman credits include playing everything from rock to jazz with everyone from Cake to Norah Jones, who sings one track on Jim’s new CD.
Campilongo is an incomparable guitar player. As GP’s Jude Gold wrote in 2003, "Nobody weaves together Jazz, Blues, and Country with the silky finesse of Jim Campilongo. Bends emanate from his weathered Deluxe Reverb like ghostly wails from a haunted castle. There are spirits in those licks."
Campilongo is a Telecaster virtuoso with chickin’ pickin’ chops to burn, expansive harmonic expertise, and a tendency to spontaneously throw in such acrobatics as behind the nut bends that blur the line between solidbody and steel guitar playing. Campilongo often adds an actual pedal steel player to his lineup in order to further facilitate that aesthetic, and for this gig he’s bringing living legend Bobby Black (Commander Cody, Asleep at the Wheel, New Riders of the Purple Sage).
Expect holiday jams so hot that they melt down the Make Out Room!
