Musicians Institute College of Contemporary Music (MI) has announced critically acclaimed guitarist Joe Satriani as the keynote speaker for their commencement ceremony on September 16th at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles. Satriani will also be honored with a Doctor of Music degree in recognition of his outstanding accomplishments in the fields of music and education throughout his career.
“We are thrilled to have Joe Satriani joining us for this year’s commencement ceremony,” said Tom Engfer, Senior Director of Education at Musicians Institute. “His career is a true inspiration to our students and we look forward to celebrating our students’ achievements while getting the opportunity to honor Joe for his successes.”
Chickenfoot, Satriani’s current project with Chili Peppers’ drummer Chad Smith, former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar and bassist Michael Anthony, will release its sophomore effort Chickenfoot III on September 27th. The first single, “Big Foot,” is celebrating its sixth week at #1 on the Mediabase rock charts. This album follows the band’s 2009 debut, which entered the Billboard Top 200 at #3 and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.
Since storming the music scene in 1987 with his sophomore album Surfing with the Alien, the guitar virtuoso has scored fourteen GRAMMY nominations and made himself a household name amongst guitar devotees around the world. In addition to his work with Chickenfoot, Satriani has recorded and toured with such artists as Mick Jagger and Alice Cooper and provided his expert teaching abilities to artists including Steve Vai and Metallica’s Kirt Hammett.
