Jimmy Woode, 1928–200

Jimmy Woode, who played on one of Duke Ellington’s most well-known records, died of a heart attack in Lindewold, New Jersey, April 24.

Although he played and recorded with jazz luminaries such as Charlie Parker, Sarah Vaughn, Miles Davis, and Billie Holiday, Woode will likely be most remembered for his work on Ellington’s immortal 1956 recording Ellington at Newport [Columbia].
