Jim Campilongo Electric Trio

Heaven Is Creepy

With a collection of tunes that range from moody, twang-noir instrumentals (“Because You Like Trombone,” “Pepper,” and the title track) to excellent vocal numbers (which feature Norah Jones and the sultry Martha Wainwright) to playfully stunning guitar workouts that are veritable treasure troves of Tele trickery, Campilongo burns slow, but hot on this, his seventh album as leader. With nearly half of the disc’s 12 tunes clocking in at under three minutes, Campilongo keeps each composition air-tight with nary a sign of filler or fluff, and his playing continues to exhibit a brilliant musicality that relies as much on a finely tuned sense of space as it does his neck-wrangling licks. The sound of a master at work. (Blue Hen.)
