Christie’s upcoming Pop Culture: Rock & Pop Memorabilia sale will present Rock fans with the chance to bid on a guitar that was once owned and played by British rock guitarist Jeff Beck. Memorabilia relating to the highly-esteemed guitarist rarely comes onto the market, and an instrument with accompanying documentation of him actually playing it provides an extremely rare opportunity for collectors.
Used by Jeff Beck throughout the promotional video for his duet with Rod Stewart, "People Get Ready," 1985 (Epic Records), the composite Fender guitar appears just as Beck intended, comprising a Stratocaster body (c.1961) and a Squier neck (c.1967) in a cream finish. The guitar was previously owned by blues guitarist Roy Buchanan and the famous guitar manufacturer Seymour W. Duncan before being passed onto Beck. This is the first time that the guitar has ever appeared at auction. Sold by a private collector, it is estimated to realize in the region of $50,000 when it goes on sale at Christie’s South Kensington on June 12 2012.
Jeff Beck is a UK rock guitarist and is perhaps most noted for being one of the three guitarists to play with the Yardbirds alongside Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. He also formed the Jeff Beck Group and Beck, Bogert & Appice. He is famous for cultivating an innovative sound that incorporated a diversity of musical genres from jazz-fusion, blues, heavy metal and electronica.
