Many of those who were fortunate enough to see Jimi Hendrix play tell a similar tale. They utter starry-eyed variations on the theme of, “Not only is he the best guy I’ve ever heard on this instrument, but I didn’t even know stuff like that was possible.” Jimi redefined the electric guitar and, in so doing, defined it. He set new, unheard-of standards for technique, feel, and soul. He not only seamlessly blended varied, disparate styles, but he made us all ask why those styles ever had to be disparate in the first place. He had a childlike innocence coupled with a wisdom beyond his years—an old soul with a kid’s imagination.
