At least 90 percent of live music is performed in venues with a capacity of 500 or less, yet those bands’ mixes are successful only around 50 percent of the time. This is an inordinately poor ratio, and in the case of important performances like industry showcases, it’s simply unacceptable. Some of what causes bad live mixes are out of our control—poor sound systems or incompetent front-of-house engineers, for example. But there are things that you can do from the stage to give yourself the best chance for a great mix.
