HIP TIP FROM From Anna Nalick

Singer/songwriter Anna Nalick cut her teeth on George Gershwin, Billie Holiday, and Ella Fitzgerald before she “developed a crush on Jeff Buckley and Stevie Ray Vaughan.”

The 21-year-old songstress is currently very busy promoting her solo debut, Wreck of the Day [Columbia].

“I never had any guitar training,” she says, “so I don’t write on guitar like someone who really knows how. Sometimes, I’ll use my guitar as a bass, and just pluck out a few notes at a time. I wrote the song ‘Citadel’ that way, playing the same two-note bass figure that’s on the album, only on my acoustic. I actually wrote a lot of my record by just plucking bass lines. Bass notes offer such an open sound to sing over that it gives me a lot more options for exactly what I want the chords and melody to be.”
